AIO Conference 2016 - Student Programme

The Association for Independent optometrist and Dispensing Opticians (AIO) 2016 conference is this weekend! It will be held at the gorgeous Vale Hotel & Resort in Cardiff. The two day conference is to be the biggest yet, much anticipated it is set to be a great couple of days.

For the first time they are holding a student specific section to the conference and students at Cardiff University have been invited along. I'm really looking forward to the event, it's the first Optometry conference I will attend! It will be really insightful to hear from those who have recently set up their own independent practice, as this is something I've been interesting in for the future.

Alongside their main lecture programme and CET (continued education sessions) a separate event is being held for those looking to move to independent practice as a start up enterprise or through private acquisition. This years programme is centred around setting up or acquiring a business, including marketing, finance, acquiring specialist equipment and insurance.

The pictures we're sent to me from the AIO of 2015's conference in Nottingham which proved to be a huge success. This year features the first student focused day and we're really looking forward to being a part of it. It's a fantastic opportunity to meet and network with others in the field as well as meet key assessors and examiners that we'll meet in the near future!

As part of the Optom process, we have to undertake a pre-registration year. This includes working provisionally as an optician, undertaking examinations, seeing certain ocular conditions and in large volumes! It's a daughnting thought for optoms, especially fresh out of university. Learning a little more about the process and meeting those involved in assessments will take a little of the nerves away and shed a little light into what is expected of us and what to expect!

Here's our itinerary for the day, which includes every students dream... free lunch! I'll let you know how it goes and take lots of pictures.

Until next time ... xo
